Orange Coast College Rowing Team and career programs

Orange Coast College rowing team headed to the rowing Nationals at Lake Lanier, Georgia in May of 2017. Rowing dates back to the Egyptian times. Rowing is sometimes called crew and it is comprised of a boat that is called the coxed and contains up to eight rowers with oars and a coxswain. The coxswain yells commands and directions to the crew. While rowing in sync with one another these boats can reach speeds of 25 miles per hour or faster. Total accuracy is required for optimal results.

 

Since establishment more than sixty years ago, Orange Coast College has been able to obtain eleven national titles in rowing. Ten students from the Orance Coast College Rowing team have gone on to compete at the Olympics and in world championships. Located in Newport Harbor in California, the David A. Grant Collegiate Rowing Center houses the boats for the OCC rowing team. Some of the boats cost as much as $55,000 each.

 

Steve Morris is the assistant coach for the men’s rowing team at OCC. Prior to his coaching career he was a coxswain on the Orange Coast College men’s rowing team when he was a student at the school. In the 1999’s Morris was the head coach for the men’s rowing team at OCC. Practices run from August to May and the team meets at the harbor at 6:30am promptly, 6 days a week.

 

Orange Coast College was founded in 1947 and is located in Costa Mesa on a 164 acre campus. The first classes at OCC started in 1948. With enrollments of over twenty five thousand students per semester, OCC is one of the nations largest community colleges. This college features one of the nations largest and most acclaimed public nautical programs as well as over 135 career programs. Additionally, OCC is top ranking in Orange County California for the number of students who complete studies and transfer into larger universities to continue their education. OCC is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and offers year round classes.
